The Furniture industry in Jamaica has been passing through difficult times over the last decade as a result of the opening of our main markets to stiff international competiton particulary from East Asia and Brazil. Several firms have gone out of business as they were unprepared for the sudden competition. The Jamaica Wood Products and Furniture Association (JaWFA) is determined that the industry recapture its previous share of the domestic furniture market and begin to make inroads in the resort market focusing on specific niches of quality wood, wicker and bamboo furniture. Studies undertaken by JaWFA have shown that Jamaicans will buy more local furniture if given quality, well-made products at a reasonable price. In 2008 we will be working with our Producers to improve quality, reliability and attention to detail. These have emerged as some of our main medium-term objectives in our just completed strategic plan.
